My name's Sierra Hughes. I'm 16 years old and I live in Norwalk, Iowa. I used to go to school out there, but now I'm at Roosevelt, which I really like. I'm a runner. I've been running since I was five, except I'm injured now. So I've taken up modeling, which is amazing. It'll give me the chance to travel and see amazing places. Lately, that's been going really well. Hopefully I can get my surgery soon and I won't have to worry about that anymore. My family's been very supportive. They, my friends, and my God are the most important things in my life. Without them, I'd be nothing. I work 2 jobs, maintain a 3.9 grade pt. average, am involved in national honor society, etc. I like to stay busy, and I think it'll pay off in the end. I'm a hard worker, and very dedicated to doing well. And that's just a little about me.
Personal Reflection on Topic of Inquiry(posted January 27 -- Peer Response January 29) To be honest, I have no idea what this post is supposed to be about. You explained it for like 2 minutes TODAY and it's due TODAY. So I'm just taking a shot in the dark here...
I'm going to write about health and fitness. I've always been passionate about maintaining a healthy life style and it drives me crazy that others don't feel the same way. The amount of obese people in this country, state, city, school.... is gross. I personally believe that obesity begins with the parents. They help their kids develop their eating habits.
I'll do a powerpoint or write a paper explaining the statistics of obese people, why it's important to be healthy and active, and how to go about doing it....
Rough Draft Definition (posted February 3 -- Peer Response February 5) 2 from webmd.com mayoclinic.com livestrong.com medicine.net pioneerthinking.com
Diet and fitness is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Many Americans neglect this though. Yourbdiet and exercise can effect your appearance, personality, and the way you feel physically and emotionally. The percentage of obese or overweight Americans is appalling reaching heights of 67.1%(webmd.com). This lack of health consciousness can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Beinghealthy can help you to avoid life threatening conditions such as these. Eating a balanced diet and workigng out regularly is cirtical(webmd.com). It will not only make you look slimmer and younger, it will makeby feel happier and more energetic(webmd.com).

Heart attack and stroke are other conditions one may face by allowing themselves to gain an excessive amount of weight. Gaining fat tissue can be avoided through diet and exercise. Diet and exercise can, in many cases, assist one in avoiding or reversing adult onset diabeities. Eating a balanced diet and working out regularly is cirtical(webmd.com) to maintaining a health and fitness conscious lifestyle. It will not only make you look slimmer and younger, it will make you feel happier and more energetic(webmd.com). Even modest weight loss can improve or prevent the health problems associated with obesity(mayoclinic.com). Not only can obesity effect a person, it will, in turn, effect their entire life. They may not be able to experience life the way a fit person would. Getting out of the house would be a chore, and walking can send an obese person into exhaustion. There are often weight limits on roller coasters and in air planes. Those who allow themselves to become overweight will often miss out on their chances to do such things as ride a roller coaster or fly on an air plane. One many not understand how an increase in fat production could effect somebody's life so severely, but it's very possible. Obesity needs to be, at all costs, avoided in order to maintain a happy, healthy, life.
CC - good. Might I suggest adding some more depth? Perhaps some examples, stories, personal experiences. Mr. J

Reflection #1 (posted February 20 -- Peer Response February 22) This is essay was difficult for me, because there was nothing in it that really interested me. I really had no feeling or passion for it. Also, I didn't really understand the concept of the definition essay. I feel like a little more explanation in class would have been really helpful. Walking through step by step with a powerpoint or something... Other than that, I think I made a lot of improvements. But I definitely need to put forth a little more effort on the next essay.
Obesity has become a rather extensive problem in American society, reaching heights of over 60%. People are becoming less health conscious each year. It’s blatantly obvious that their lives will differ vastly from those who maintain a healthy life style in ways including the amount of strenuous activity they can handle, the acquisition of obesity related disease, and even life span.
A person who is obese will find a regular day’s activity more strenuous than a thin person. Somebody who is in shape will easily be able to march up a flight of stairs, leaving somebody whom has too much body fat in the dust. A thin person can easily pick up their children and carry them to their crib, where as somebody who is overweight may find this task extremely difficult, they may not even be able to carry it out.
Being overweight is undesirable for your body, not only in appearance, but also health wise. Somebody who is overweight has often neglected eating a healthy diet and exercising. Somebody who is in shape, in most cases, eats a balanced diet and works out regularly. This will eventually prevent heart attack, stroke, and other conditions that can vastly effect a person’s life. An obese person is much more likely to acquire adult onset diabetes. It is possible for a thin person to acquire these but it’s much less likely.
Studies show that a person who is more than 80 pounds over weight is likely to live around 12 years less than those who take care of their bodies. Even slight weight loss can improve the condition of your life. With even a small change, you're likely to add years to your span.
It’s clear that one should take care of their body through diet and exercise. Doing so is vital to avoiding these life threatening conditions.
Revision Comparison (posted March 2 -- Peer Response March 4)
Obesity has become a rather extensive problem in American society, reaching heights of over 60%(WebMD). People are becoming less and less health conscious; this is causing some major health problems. A person whom is overweight will experience life differently than somebody in a healthy condition. Obesity causes effortless exhaustion and will cause heighten their risk for heart disease and other critical conditions, and may also decrease life expectancy.
A person who is obese will find a regular day’s activity more strenuous than a healthy person. Somebody who is in shape will easily be able to march up a flight of stairs, leaving somebody whom has too much body fat in the dust. If that doesn't resonate with you, perhaps this will: A thin person can easily pick up their children and carry them to their crib, where as somebody who is overweight may find this task extremely difficult, they may not even be able to carry it out. To an extent, they may not even be able to hold their children. There's also a high possibility of passing on traits such as obesity genetically. Would you really want your child to suffer?

Rough Draft Argument (posted April 6 -- Peer Response April 8)
A major problem facing the world right now is global warming. A bigger problem, though, is who people are blaming for global warming- themselves. It's a common misconception to believe that humans are the cause of this climate change world wide. Those who have any knowledge of climate and the world's climate throughout history would find this notion outrageous. Earth goes through global warming cycles, where the earth cools for 100,000 years and heats for 10,000 years (skepticalscience.com). The earth is in the 6,000th year since warming has begun. The cause of this warming is not because of humans, but rather the natural cycle of the world.
CO2 is said to be the cause of rising global temperatures. CO2, though, isn't only caused by the burning of fossil fuels by humans, it can also be caused naturally. Even small organisms such as bacteria can produce mass amounts of CO2 just by consuming and reproducing methane (skepticalscience.com). Production of CO2 by humans, though, may speed up the process of warming, but is not the initial cause.
In addition, there have been hints that changes in the sun could be causing changes in the earth as well. Scientists say that CO2 contributions have played a small role in global warming, but these can not compete with solar irradiance (nationalgeographic.com). The sun's heat output has caused changes on both mars and earth, which is why earth has experienced global heating and cooling throughout history (nationalgeographic.com).
Clearly, scientific evidence points against the myth that humans are causing global warming. Natural processes and periodic changes in the earth's climate are the principal cause for the rise in the earth's temperature.

Obesity is an enormous concern in America today. The percentage of obese or overweight Americans is appalling, reanching heights of 67.1%(webmd.com). Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat.
Obesity is more than just a cosmetic concern, though; It increases your risk of diseases and health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure(mayoclinic.com). Being extremely obese means you are especially likely to have health problems related to your weight(mayoclinic.com).

Not only this, but studies show that a person who is more than 80 pounds over weight is likely to live around 12 years less than those who take care of their bodies. A fit person’s life expectancy is rather longer than somebody whom is obese.
It’s clear that one should take care of their body to avoid these life threatening conditions. They can not only effect you but in some cases, the people you love as well. An obese person's life may be much less fulfilling, but slight weight loss could improve this state. Extreme measures, in some cases, should be made to maintain or improve the health of Americans.
EXTRA CREDIT:
Being overweight is, clearly, undesirable for your body. Somebody who is overweight has often neglected eating a healthy diet and exercising. Somebody who is in shape, though, in most cases, eats a balanced diet and works out regularly. This will eventually prevent heart attack, stroke, and other conditions that can vastly effect a person’s life. An obese person is much more likely to acquire adult onset diabetes. Reflection #2 (posted March 16 -- Peer Response March 25)
The revision part of this essay worked a lot better than it did in my first essay, I think. I think this essay as a whole went a lot smoother. It'd really help if you would do some revisions on our rough draft for us.

Reflection #3 (posted April 23)
I think this was one of my better essays this year. I'm fairly proud of the work I've accomplished on this essay.
